Many of you will remember the wonderful Lucy, one of our ambassadors for the 2023 Carols by Candlelight. We were able to catch up with Denise, Lucy’s mum, to get an update on her life over the past eight months.

In the months that followed Carols, Lucy started preschool. Denise says, “she is still the happy little girl from last year, however with a lot more questions and a lot more to say.” Lucy has continued her hobbies of swimming and riding her bike and has taken up little athletics, trying lots of different sports. So far, she’s found a new love for soccer, tennis and baseball.

These past eight months have seen a shift in Lucy’s confidence, with her showing an increased courage and curiosity in how she navigates her world. Having travelled to Japan as a family, Lucy was able to navigate a new environment, which included things like stairs, trains, buses and planes, and did so with confidence and enthusiasm.

Reflecting on Vision Australia’s support over the last eight months, Denise shows her appreciation for Lucy’s Occupational Therapist, who attends Lucy’s pre-school to help inform her educators on how to best support her. Due to the continued support, Lucy’s fortnightly visits have dropped to monthly, something Denise is very pleased about.

Denise says “Vision Australia has continued to support our family, and we have continued to do so as well. My husband’s work helped to raise money in the 100k Your Way challenge, which has led us to meeting quite a few other people within our social and professional networks who have also been supported by Vision Australia.”

Australia's support of Carols by Candlelight lights up the lives of children like Lucy. Thank you for making a difference to the lives of kids who are blind or have low vision.
