Meet Mikail

Mikail Laikos is a vibrant 14-year-old boy full of life and curiosity. His incredible journey began the moment he was born when he was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma, a rare genetic condition.

Despite his diagnosis, Mikail remains unstoppable. His family describes him as a resilient, upbeat boy who takes on every opportunity with enthusiasm. Curious about the world, Mikail has a deep interest in geography and history, particularly in World War II.

Vision Australia have supported Mikail from the beginning and continue to guide him throughout his education and development. “The first week that he came home from hospital, they were at our doorstep,” Mikail’s mother, Joanna, says. “For us, Vision Australia has been so important and very supportive in his whole journey. Supporting him at school, at home and in his social relationships,” she continues.

“Vision Australia is such a pivotal thing for us as a family. It’s a complete life-supporting organisation. Definitely lifelong partners is the way I’d put it,” Mikail’s father, Angelo, says.

“To all vision impaired or blind kids out there, no matter what other people tell you that you can’t do, just remember there’s always different pathways, and you can always do what you want if you’re set on it.”
