Andy Karl is a Olivier Award winning, 3 time Tony Award nominated American stage, TV, and film actor originally from Baltimore, MD.
He has appeared in countless Broadway and International theatrical productions including his Olivier, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award winning, TONY nominated role as Phil Connors in Groundhog Day the Musical. In an unprecedented event Andy’s heralded performance as Phil returned to the prestigious Old Vic Theatre in London in 2024 breaking the theater's box offi ce records for the 2nd time. Shortly after this he was brought to Melbourne, Australia in the same role and recieved the Green Room Award nomination for outstanding Actor in a Musical. Bill Murray (original star of the movie, Groundhog Day) came to see Andy’s performance twice during the Broadway run and cheered his take on the role in several interviews after. One of Andy’s greatest achievements during his time with this show was winning the hand of his fi ance’, multiple award winning and Australian entrepreneur Elise McCann, who played opposite him in the Melbourne production.
His tenacious abilities were applied in another stand-out performance as Rocky Balboa in Rocky The Musical where he received his 1st of 3 Tony nominations. Sylvester Stallone hand picked Andy for the role after a nationwide search. The tireless performance appeared before cheering crowds where Andy used his boxing skills to impress celebrity endorsments from the likes of Wesley Snipes, Tom Hanks, Paul Rudd, WIll Smith, Joan Rivers, middleweight world champion Gennadit Golovkin, Evander Hollyfi eld and Bayone Bleeder Chuck Wepner to name a few.
His 2nd Tony nominated, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle winning performance was as Bruce Granit in the Broadway revival of On the Twentieth Century opposite American stage and TV icons Kristin Chenowith and Peter Gallagher.
Other notable originating performances include the sensation Legally Blonde the Musical as Kyle the UPS Guy. Over the original premier weekend alone the musical hosted over 12.5 million views on MTV. It has since grown exponentially with its release on YouTube and is lauded as one of the most successful televised live action musicals of all time.
Other Broadway performances include the lead role in Pretty Woman the Musical, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, 9 to 5, Saturday Night Fever, The Wedding Singer, Wicked, Moulin Rouge and Jersey Boys.
Off-Broadway he was in the original companies of Australian composer Anna K. Jacob’s Teeth the Musical, Altar Boys, Stephen Sondheim’s Saturday Night opposite Australian star and personal friend David Campbell.
On screen, Karl is perhaps most well-known for his role as Sgt. Mike Dodds on NBC’s Season 17 of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. His 15 episode arc playing opposite stars Mariska Hargitay and Ice-T were invaluable experiences to his television career. His latest television performance was on CBS network’s The Equalizer where he reunited with fi lm and music icon Queen Latifa (after their appearance together in the feature fi lm Joyful Noise.) Other TV appearances include Blue Bloods, The Good Fight, Forever, Prodigal Son, Gossip Girl (2024) and voicing characters on the animated series Hit Job and No Activity. As mentioned above Andy starred alongside Dolly Parton, Queen Latifah and Jeremy Jordan in feature fi lm Joyful Noise. In 2021 Andy starred as Tommy Devito opposite pop-music and movie star Nick Jonas in the live action feature of Jersey Boys to be released at a future date. He starred opposite Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton in And So It Goes directed by award winning icon Rob Reiner; and starred as love interest to Christina Ricci in Indie film Here After.
Andy additionally has had success as a music composer, screenwriter, producer and director. He is creator and Executive Producer of the 2025 Hallmark Channel fi lm Christmas Above The Clouds. He is co-writer and producer on the feature fi lm Just The Hits slated for production in 2026 as well as writer, director and producer of the stage comedy Scoonge: A Mobbed Up Christmas Carol which premiered in New York in 2022 & 2023 and continues to be licensed regionally.
He is a strong advocate for numerous charities, including raising money and awareness performing and speaking on behalf of Broadway Barks, Broadway Bares and Equity Fights Aid.
His incredible depth of skill, playfulness and the complexity that he brings to character has led to him frequently being requested to workshop and develop new musicals, including original workshop/ development casts of at least 50 shows, highlights being working with John Cleese in numerous developments of A Fish Called Wanda; as well as Waitress the Muscial, Betty Boop the Musical and all his Broadway original cast performances.
He has appeared in concert at Carnegie Hall twice, including alongside theatre legend Chita Rivera. As well as at Lincoln Centre and New York City Centre. He has appeared on over 6 Original Broadway cast recording soundtracks.
Alongside his extensive list of international nominations and awards, Andy has been recognised for his distinguished career, appearing in Vogue twice, as special guest on Stephen Colbert and David Lettermen’s the Late Show, and performances on the View and Good morning America.
He is excited to return to Australia for his second show in 2026 in the titular role of the upcoming production of Beetlejuice the Musical slated for tour commencing in June 2026.
