Early learning and development

Our allied health team, professionals and specialist staff work tirelessly to ensure young children with vision loss can master important life skills including daily routines, such as mealtime and family outings; playing, moving and exploring; using language and listening; and social skills, like sharing and joining in.

Our special braille and tactile storybook kits help children who have vision loss learn and develop in a unique, sensory way to support lifelong literacy.

We have over 800 kits to choose from, ranging from simple stories for babies to more complex options for school-aged children. We even offer kits in languages like Chinese, Vietnamese, Turkish and Arabic!

Last year, Vision Australia spent over 25,000 hours supporting children in their primary school years.

Support ranges from advice on lighting and desk setup to different formats for educational materials and technology to enable reading, writing and other tasks. Children can access activities and sports clubs, make friends, learn ways to talk about their vision and advocate for themselves.

LEAP (Learn, Engage, Act, Perform) is Vision Australia’s pioneering employability and leadership program for young people aged between 14 and 17.

Running for nine months, the program covers a range of activities including boosting your tech skills, presenting an “elevator pitch”, voice coaching, financial literacy, resume writing and building emotional resilience. Aspiring future leaders can also learn some tricks of the trade at the five-day Youth Leadership and Business Summit.
